The successful candidate will manage Brighter Spark Applied Research (BSAR) and the Social Research Certificate training program and help build and sustain other initiatives of Spark: a centre for social research innovation.

 About Spark : Spark connects researchers to the people, skills and tools needed to stand at the forefront of social research innovation.  Social research methods are expanding rapidly and the potential for creative, impactful research is vast. It is Spark's mission to engage with researchers and community organizations to harness the full power of social research to build a brighter world.  We have a highly inter-disciplinary team of students and staff who both have individual responsibilities (in this case managing BSAR and the Certificates) and are responsible for contributing across our initiatives as skills and priorities allow.

 About Brighter Spark Applied Research <>:  Brighter Spark brings the best of practical, applied social science research to those seeking to create a brighter world.  As an applied research, evaluation and organizational change firm based at McMaster, Brighter Spark provides robust research that is directly actionable in helping organizations continuously grow their impact.  The Brighter Spark Manager will work closely with the Executive Director and a team of 5-7 students to generate and implement projects with excellence.

 About the Social Research Certificate training program: The manager will have the opportunity to build this program from the ground up.  We are in the process of getting approval for multiple Certificates in Social Research (Qualitative, Quantitative and Applied).  The manager will work with the Communications team to do market research, select which trainings to prioritize for implementation, find excellent teachers, and ensure that the trainings significantly advance the skill base in not for profits, social enterprises, and government. 

 This position is for a talented, creative applied researcher/evaluator with a strong mixed methods research toolkit and a practical, developmental orientation to supporting community organizations.  The following is a high-level summary of the responsibilities specific to this position - for more detail on specific tasks, please see the Additional Information section.  For more on how we will assess applicants, please see the Assets section.

•             Actively engage with and support all Brighter Spark customers as their programs evolve.

•             Effectively market Brighter Spark and the Social Research Certificates by developing strong relationships in the community and ensuring and promoting the excellence of our work and training for the social sector.

•             Establish partnerships, develop scopes of work, and implement contracts.

•             Train, coach and build appropriate learning opportunities for the Brighter Spark research team and for all teachers in the Social Research Certificates program while ensuring they maintain our standards of excellence.

•             Offer training relevant to audiences both within and outside McMaster as part of Spark’s training programs, where feasible.

•             Provide consultations to faculty, staff and students around research design, qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods, and other areas of expertise.

•             Support other Spark programs as aligned with skills and time available.

Spark adheres to Faculty of Social Science policies regarding in-person and hybrid work arrangements. This position will be hybrid for the rest of 2022, with some flexibility for working-at-home work.  There is a current minimum expectation of two days per week in the Spark offices.     


Master's degree in a relevant field of study
